Summer House

The first edition. Music for long summer nights.

The cover says where this music lives. A terrace at the end of the day, cypresses going black against the hill, a pool nobody is swimming in, a lounger with no one on it yet. A marble wrestler waits beside the pool, left arm across his chest, right hand up and poised, perfectly still. The sun sets. The rhythm takes its time.

This is the first Summer House. It started in spring last year, when I started running more regularly and building a list out of the new Ibiza-bound tracks, which turned out to be good running music. Before there was a series to speak of, it set the pattern for everything after it: melodic house, more groove than drop, tracks that hold up when you listen closely and stay out of the way when you don't.

Seventy-five tracks. Summertime Blues opens dreamy, warm, and gently hypnotic, then quickly drops into a filtered UK garage bass groove. The rest of the mix keeps that balance, melody up top and a floor that never lets go, all the way to the end. It ends with Luv U, which is how every Summer House ends now.

Some songs work like a switch. A few bars in, the day loosens, one particular July is back in the room, and you're the one you'd choose to be. Every play wears the groove a little deeper, until the song is a place you can go whenever you want. A playlist is that, in order: a route through a few of those places, one opening into the next, laid down on purpose. The old word for a mark made to hold an intention is a sigil, and a list of songs can be one.

This one has a destination, and the cover already names it. Infatuation after infatuation, and on and on. The condition itself, more than any one song, one person or one summer, held for three hours the way the figure on the terrace holds his pose. The practice builds range more than happiness. You feel each one all the way through, let it go, and meet the next. That's what the and on and on is for.

Put it on when the light goes gold and let it run.
