chapter two of ten · a feeding pair

branching extends the field

branching radiating

branches carry the spread farther: each division extends the field's reach outward.

imagery · the canopy
· emergence
something new arrives

what arrives is met by a field with long reach.

the field has been extending itself, branch by branch, its edge farther out than it has ever been. into that reach, something arrives. it is met early, far from the middle, by a field built for meeting.

the canopy catches dawn at its outermost leaves first. the reach was grown before the arrival, and the arrival lands where the reach had grown.

&
· threshold
the balance reaches its tipping point

the tipping point is felt to the field's far edge.

a balance reaches its tipping point in a field whose branches carry everything outward. the change travels the whole network at once; the farthest twig knows what the trunk knows.

lightning branches for the same reason: one release, carried to every extremity in a single stroke. how far the change reaches was settled by how far the field had grown.

&
· coupling
each shapes the other

each shapes the other, and the field grows by their exchange.

each shapes the other in a field that extends by branching. their exchange is itself an extension: every pass between them reaches somewhere neither reaches alone.

aurora spans two poles this way, one coupled field wearing the whole sky. the pair's shaping is the field's growing; they are the same event, seen close and seen far.

&
· boundary
an edge forms

an edge forms at the far reach of the field.

the field has extended itself outward, and now an edge forms, out where the reach arrived. the edge names how far: this is the field's true size, drawn at last where the branches ended.

the horizon does this for sight. reach and edge complete each other; a field with a named far edge holds everything within it differently, all of it now inside.

&
· yield
pressure meets no resistance

the reach bends around the pressure and keeps extending.

pressure arrives against an extending field and meets no fixed opposition. branches bend where they are pressed and extend where they are free; the growing continues by the open ways.

cirrus reaches across the sky the same way, thinning around the wind. nothing braced, so nothing broke; the field's reach today includes the shape of what once pressed it.

&
· settle
the field finds its level

the extended field settles as one body.

the field finds its level out to its farthest branch. everything the branching reached is included in the settling; extension made the field larger, and now stillness makes it whole.

dusk gathers the canopy the same way, outermost leaves and trunk in one shade. the reach was the day's work; the level is the evening's.

&
· return
something comes back

what comes back travels a reach that grew while it was gone.

something comes back to a field that has extended itself in the meantime. the way home is longer and better connected than the way out was; the branches that grew in the absence now carry the return.

moonlight travels farther than the lamp it left. the field kept extending, so the return arrives to more field than it remembers, all of it its own.
