signal & void the book
chapter one of ten · a feeding pair

flowing opens new branches

flowing branching

movement itself makes new paths: where flow runs, branches open, and each new branch is fed by the running.

imagery · the delta
· emergence
something new arrives

what arrives finds more than one way in.

the flow is opening branches as it runs, and into that widening field something arrives. it meets a delta: many mouths, all of them fed by one running water.

the arrival and the opening were made for each other. the branches were opening before anything came, and what came was already on its way to a field that could receive it. dawn light does the same, arriving everywhere the land has opened.

&
· threshold
the balance reaches its tipping point

the tipping point opens a new branch.

a balance reaches its tipping point in a field where flow keeps opening paths, and the tip becomes a fork taken. the moment the balance goes over, the running water has somewhere new to go, because the going itself makes ways.

lightning finds its path the same way: one branch of many possible, taken completely. what tipped follows the channel that was opening to receive it.

&
· coupling
each shapes the other

each shapes the other, and new paths open between them.

each shapes the other inside a field where flow keeps branching. the shaping travels: what passes between the two of them runs outward and opens paths beyond them both.

aurora works this way, two fields coupled, and the whole sky gains new channels of light. the pair is the source; the branches are what their meeting made.

&
· boundary
an edge forms

an edge forms, and the branching runs along it.

an edge forms in a field of opening paths. the branches meet it and run along it, the way water meets stone and finds the ways around. the edge gives the branching something definite to answer.

the horizon line does the same for a spreading sky: every path that opens now opens in relation to it. the edge and the branches arrive together, and together they draw the map.

&
· yield
pressure meets no resistance

the branching passes around what presses on it.

pressure arrives in a field of opening paths and meets no fixed opposition. where one branch is pressed, the flow takes another; the field has always had more ways than one.

cirrus scatters this way, thin and many-stranded, and holds the sky. nothing was defended, and nothing was lost: the running water kept running, by the paths that remained open.

&
· settle
the field finds its level

the many branches find one level.

the field finds its level across every open branch at once. water in many channels stands at one height; that is what connection means. the branching looked like scattering, and the settling shows it was one body all along.

dusk levels the light the same way, across everything the day opened. what ran in many directions rests as one field.

&
· return
something comes back

what comes back finds new ways home.

something comes back to a field that kept opening paths while it was away. there are more ways in than there were ways out.

the moonlit delta receives the tide the same way it sent the river: by many mouths. the return can arrive by whichever branch is open, and every branch leads to the same water.
